What is art? Is it possible to even define such a concept? Is the definition of art the same to every person, should it be? These are all questions being asked everyday by those in the art community and those who follow it. At the heart of the discussion is the question of whether art is necessarily confined to the great, professional masters of the craft or whether art can be produced by others. When it comes to the changing nature of art one of the best examples is that of street painting. Street painting has been around for years but its popularity has exploded thanks to the internet. Because of such exposure the street painting community has received more attention than ever before and they have largely responded by creating ever bigger and more elaborate pieces to feed this newfound appetite for their work.
Such internet coverage has also lead to fundamental changes in the street art scene and its mentality. Prior to the internet their was an inherent melancholy beauty to street painting. This beauty lied in knowing that no matter how great the creation was it was transient. Time or civic authorities would ensure that the street painting had a short shelf life. Therefore artists could not prosper from their work, it could not be kept or sold, it was art purely for the sake of art. With the ability now to capture and preserve these works of art online this has changed. Artists can now build portfolios of street painting projects and share these all over the world long after the original work is gone. So has street painting changed, and if so for the better or worse? As of now only time will tell.
