Getting organized can be the best way to protect yourself against the cliched horror stories of chaotic, last minute moves that so many of us have heard from friends and family. One of the best ways to do this is to create a moving out check list with all of the things that must be done, as well as a deadline by which to do them, before you move. First and foremost on every moving out check list should be securing the vendors to help you move. Whether you plan on renting a moving van and doing the rest of the heavy lifting yourself, or whether you plan on hiring movers to help you with all or part of the move, you should make your reservations as early as possible. Adhering to this particular part of your moving out check list should prevent you from overpaying as the result of a last minute, slapdash reservation at any available place.
Once you have made the aforementioned reservations, add packing up various rooms, with a reasonable deadline for each, to your moving out check list. This helps prevent unfortunate moving accidents due to careless, last minute packing jobs, and also helps to minimize the possibility of anything being left behind. Next on your moving out check list should be turning off the utilities at your old home, and making appointments to turn them on at your new one. Failing to do this can potentially lead to having to pay the utility bill for the new occupants of your old home, or shivering in the dark at your new one. Make sure that all utility companies know when you are moving, and when to turn off or turn on service at each place. Finally, make sure that your moving out check list includes verifying that your new home is going to be ready for occupancy by an agreed on date. Making a moving out check list that includes all of the above points should be a fantastic step towards creating a positive moving experience.
