Monroe County in New York State has its county seat in Rochester. In terms of economy Rochester is second to New York City. Its the third most populated city in the state. In a nationwide survey in 2007, Rochester was ranked as the sixth most livable city in America. It is rated as one of the best cities to live in.
Rochester city was founded by Colonel Nathanial Rochester who purchased a hundred acres along the Genesee River. Rochester city becomes the largest flour producing city in 1838 and earned the nickname city of flour. Subsequently it was named city of flower when the flour business had moved west and nurseries had taken over. Industrial activity started in the post civil war period and companies like Eastman Kodak and Bausch & Lomb were founded in Rochester. Rochester is the home to some of the leading Fortune 1000 companies. One of the countrys best public schooling systems is in Rochester.
Rochester has its own white hot which is a variant of the hotdog made by the local Zweigle Company. Another famous local dish is the garbage plate. The well known frozen food company Birds Eye is also headquartered in Rochester.
Olden days neighborhoods have been well preserved in Rochester. A majority of whites followed by blacks are the main races living in Rochester. Other races are in minority in Rochester.
Some fine educational institutions including colleges and universities are based in Rochester. University of Rochester is ranked as the 35th best university in the country.
Asides from the well preserved Victorian building and top educational institutions, Rochester is a hub of culture and recreation. Some world famous cultural institutions like the Garth Fagan dance, Rochester philharmonic orchestra, George Eastman house and several museums are located in Rochester. Golf courses, baseball and football clubs dot the city. Ice hockey is a favorite sport that is played here. Rochester boasts having at least seven professional teams
The city is teeming with nightlife and there are bars, restaurants and night clubs that operate till late in the night. There are plenty of shopping malls in Rochester as well. Rochester is an attractive city for tourists. Some very lovely parks are located in Rochester.
Rochester has a fair share of festivals that start late spring and throughout summer. The Lilac festival is a very big tourist attraction and more than 500,000 visitors throng to it annually. Besides having a ferry link to Ontario, Canada, there are air, road and rail links that serve Rochester.
